What do if the your Washer fills with water but constantly drains out?

In normal operation, the machine will collect and drain water several times per cycle – at least twice: once for washing and once for rinsing. The exact amount depends on the selected programme and its duration. But it is absolutely abnormal if your machine suddenly becomes “greedy” and constantly pours water.

This excessive “appetite” for your washing machine may indicate either that the machine has been installed incorrectly or that a malfunction has occurred. Either way, the problem needs to be solved. Otherwise – at least you will get poor-quality washing at a huge consumption of water, as a maximum – you can finally “dolomat” washing, flooding in addition to the neighbors.

So, if the washing machine is only installed, it may be the wrong sewer connection. When the drain hose is below tank level, the water flows into the sewer system by gravity. The machine “realizes” that there is not enough water and starts pouring it again. In turn, a new portion of water goes the same way…

How do I check if my washing machine is connected correctly?

If a washer is normally connected, the drain hose must be above the tank: normally it is attached either to a siphon or to a sewer pipe, raising it 50-60 cm from floor level. So if you think that a newly installed machine is constantly collecting water – be sure to look at the level of the drain.

However, there is a possibility when it is impossible to see the place of connection – locker, ledge on the wall, etc. In this case, run a simple test: start the washing machine and wait until the tank is filled with water. Then turn on the “drain” and press “pause” as the water falls. Now pay close attention to the remaining water level: if the water stops emptying during the pause, everything is fine. If the water keeps dropping (you can see and sometimes hear it in the pipes), there is a connection problem. At this stage, we recommend that you postpone the wash and call a wizard who will install the washing correctly.

If the washing machine was working normally, but suddenly began to ask for a lot of water, then the problem is “internal”. Something’s broken. In this case, turn off the machine from the mains, cut off the water hose and drain the water with an additional drain filter.

Major breakdowns in which the washer constantly picks up and drains water

Below we will look at the main problems that may cause the washer to start consuming too much water. Please note that special equipment is required for accurate diagnosis and subsequent repair! Therefore, we do not recommend doing it yourself.

Breakdown What’s the problem?

Water level sensor malfunction.

The water level sensor (pressure switch) may have failed. It determines how much water is in the tank and whether it is necessary to command the inlet valve to the bay. The pressostat determines the filling status of the machine by the pressure of the water column. Due to limescale, sludge and other small debris, the sensor pressure pipe can be clogged and the pressostat will give incorrect information to the machine “brain”. In addition, the gates and hoses of the pressostat can be let down: in the event of a blockage or if there is an air leak, the sensor will also give incorrect information.  As a result – the machine will constantly pour water.

In any case, a thorough diagnosis and repair or replacement of the water level sensor is necessary.

Inlet valve malfunction.

The inlet valve that is responsible for the water supply does not work properly. Maybe the valve is out of order and does not block the water in principle, or maybe only the diaphragm is weakened – due to which water seeps even when it is closed.

The valve has to be replaced.

The operation of the washing machine, which constantly collects and drains water, is fraught not only with exorbitant bills for water supply. The main danger lies in the fact that the load on the machine in this case goes beyond normal: first of all, suffers from the Heater, which constantly heats the newly received water. As a result, limescale is formed more actively, which affects both the heating elements and other parts of the unit. But the worst thing is that sometimes the overfill protection system does not work in the machines: even then, a local flood cannot be avoided.
